London Wasps History

The Wasps rugby club dates back to 1867. It was not until 1871 did the club receive an invitation to become part of the newly formed rugby union. A small break down in communication saw the team miss the inauguration ceremony resulting in the club not been an original member of the now world famous rugby union. The clubs first home ground was at the north London ground called Finchley road. The next 40 years the club moved from ground to ground renting until they where able to purchase their former ground at Sudbury in 1923.

The professional area which took rugby by storm in the early 1990’s saw dramatic changes for the London wasps. These years so the team gain strength and within a short period of time they have assembled one of the best teams within the UK. Some of the highlights include the winning of the Tatley’s Bitter Cup in 1996 and the winning the Middlesex Sevens title in 1993. The new millennium has seen a number of international players join the London Wasps and this has ensured that they will be a top year for many years to come. The wasps name is off course named after the small stinging insect. The name has no real meaning and it was very common for sporting teams at the time to be named after animals and or insects. With the name chosen it made sense for the team to adopt the black and yellow colors seen on the wasp. The professional area of the game has resulted in the shirts been manufactured by Canterbury of New Zealand. However the general design of the Wasp rugby shirt still remains unchanged.
